Introduction to Tubular Motor

A tubular motor is an electric motor embedded in a cylindrical form factor. They are typically used for window shades and blinds, projection screens, awnings, roller doors, etc.

Advantages of Tubular Motor

Easy to Install and Retrofit
Simplicity is a key element of any great design and whether new or retrofitted, tubular linear motors are simple to install. Robust and thermally efficient they provide drop-in replacements for ball screws and pneumatic cylinders. The motors are optimised to ensure the minimum effort and impact on end customers. A key feature is that mechanically the motor is designed to be fully compatible with standard pneumatics accessories, such as mounting plates, linear guides, and coupling pieces.

Precision and Thermal Stability
Going from flatbed to tubular actuation significantly improves thermal stability. With less expansion, components and the overall system perform with higher accuracy. The linear motor also offers high levels of positional accuracy, with 10 micrometer resolution based on an integrated position sensor. Given the trend for increasing automation in motion control technology, the requirement for positioning accuracy is essential.

Energy Efficient
Both the economic and environmental impacts of energy efficiency in machinery continue to increase in importance. Energy efficiency should be designed into a machine or component to best harness the benefits. With the motor’s tubular structure design, the magnetic flux, generated by the permanent magnets contained in a stainless steel shaft, can be fully utilized by a forcer that covers the full shaft surface. This design enables optimal energy efficiency.

Designed For Low Maintenance
Machines with flatbed linear motors typically require a separate chiller for thermal stability, and the attractive force between coil and magnet bed creates tremendous downforces on the bearings, making everything wear faster, decreasing efficiency. In addition, flatbed-style linear motors typically have a back-iron in their magnetic circuit which further increases the downforces and creates cogging. The tubular motor consists of a shaft containing magnets and a forcer containing wound copper coils. The symmetric design results in zero attractive forces between the forcer and shaft, greatly reducing the loading requirement on support bearings. The thermal barrier design separates and removes heat from the motor, eradicating thermal growth for the machine.

Ingress Protection (IP) for Harsh Environments
The absence of direct contact between parts and no need for rail tracks means no need for lubricants, which can risk contamination. Flatbed motors can be challenging to seal and protect, but tubular motors provide a superior level of protection from material ingress, as well as increased safety levels for the operator.

Compact Design
A compact footprint is another benefit of tubular designs when compared to flat linear motors. The design also provides the option to move with either the forcer in motion and the thrust rod stationary or vice versa. The option for the thrust rod to be in motion is one factor making tubular linear motors an ideal replacement for pneumatic cylinders. Along with more speed and higher accuracy the benefits of a tubular linear design are being adopted across multiple industries.

Working Principle of Tubular Motor

Tubular Linear Motors are electromagnetic devices. They work on the basic principle of a magnetic field interacting with an electric current to produce force. However, unlike rotary motors that convert this force into a circular motion, Tubular Linear Motors apply this force directly along a linear path.

The motor consists of a rod-shaped ‘forcer’ (usually magnetically active) that moves linearly within a stator made up of coil windings.

When electric current passes through the coil windings in the stator, it generates a magnetic field.

This magnetic field interacts with the magnets in the forcer, resulting in a linear force that moves the forcer along the length of the stator.

How to Choose a Tubular Motor?

The first step is to calculate the weight of your intended load. If your application is for shades, blinds, screens or any other project that uses fabric or some type of material on a roller tube, you may first want to read our article about how to calculate blind or shade material weight. Note that the length or weight of the roller tube has little effect on the motor requirements, but the diameter of your tube and the fabric or load weight do.

The lift capacity ratings do not include the weight of the tube as it is not being lifted, only rotated. The maximum load on the motor occurs when the shade is in the down position and the retraction is started. As the shade rolls up, the load decreases.

The motors have built-in "smart" load sensing circuitry on the internal motherboard and will simply stop if you exceed the lift capability. They will not be harmed.

Also, our specifications are conservative as we measure them by lifting a dead weight all the way up, which is not what happens when a shade is retracted (as previously mentioned above, the load is reduced as the shade retracts).

The motors also have a momentary torque "burst" at startup that allows them to momentarily lift more than the rated lift capacity. The load rating is "continuous lift capability".

Tips for Tubular Motor
1

Do not install any wiring or attempt to run the operator without checking the wiring diagrams first.

2

Disconnect power before proceeding with any wiring.

3

Do not turn on power until you have finished making all power and control wiring connections.

4

The operator must be properly grounded. Failure to properly ground the operator could result in electric shock and serious injury or death.

5

To avoid damage to the door and operator, make all door locks inoperative. Secure locks in the unlocked position, or install external electrical interlocks to prevent operation with the locks engaged. (NOTE: external electrical interlocks should be provided only with a Smart Motor Control (SMC).

6

Do not change closing control from constant pressure to momentary pressure without installing a sensing edge. This could result in serious injury or death to person(s) trapped beneath the door.

7

After installation, ensure that the operator, lock sensor, controls, and sensing edge or other entrapment protection devices have been tested and function properly.

A: Tubular Linear Motors are electromagnetic devices. They work on the basic principle of a magnetic field interacting with an electric current to produce force. However, unlike rotary motors that convert this force into a circular motion, Tubular Linear Motors apply this force directly along a linear path.

Q: What is a motor used for?

A: Applications include industrial fans, blowers and pumps, machine tools, household appliances, power tools, vehicles, and disk drives. Small motors may be found in electric watches.

Q: What parts does a tubular motor consist of?

A: A tubular motor, also known as a tube motor or tubular linear motor, consists of a magnetic rotor and an electric coil in a housing. The piston rod is the magnetic rotor (magnets placed at fixed distances in a tube). The box is the electric coil. The magnetic rotor slides through a plastic slide bushing, which is housed in the coil box. When the coil is energized, the magnetic rotor thus moves. An integrated distance measuring system enables position detection.

Q: What are the benefits of Tubular Linear Motors?

A: Thanks to their specific design and operation, Tubular Linear Motors offer several benefits over other types of linear and rotary motors.
Direct Drive
Since Tubular Linear Motors provide motion directly without the need for mechanical transmission elements like gears or belts, they offer high precision and reduced mechanical complexity.
High Speed and Acceleration
They can attain high speeds and accelerations, making them suitable for applications demanding fast, precise movements.
Compact and Flexible Design
The tubular design allows for a more compact motor structure. This flexibility makes these motors adaptable to a wide range of applications, including ones with limited space.

Q: What are the applications of Tubular Linear Motors?

A: Given the advantages offered by Tubular Linear Motors, they find use in a multitude of sectors where precision and speed are crucial.
Robotics: These motors offer high precision and controllability, ideal for robotic arms and automation equipment.
Semiconductor Manufacturing: The semiconductor industry requires extremely precise movements for manufacturing processes, something these motors can efficiently deliver.
Medical Equipment: From MRI machines to precision surgical tools, the compact and precise nature of Tubular Linear Motors is highly beneficial.
Packaging Industry: High speed and precision in a compact design also make these motors useful in packaging machinery.

Q: Is the tubular motor powerful?

A: Tubular linear motors include an armature and a rotor. The armature, or thruster, consists of a single conductive wire cylindrically wound and encapsulated. The stator is a cylindrical assembly of sintered NdFeB permanent magnets arrayed in an onaxis North-South stack contained in an encasing tube. Without iron core elements, there is no cogging so motion is smooth. The moving thruster does not actually ride on the stator. A relatively large air gap of about 1 mm separates the components. Such a gap is beneficial because it lowers alignment tolerances during installation. Supporting the thruster is an independent bearing system. As with forcer platten motors, the single stator can independently control multiple thrusters. Like almost all linear motors, tubular designs operate in servo mode. Analog or digital Hall-effect switches embedded within the armature render sinusoidal or multi-step trapezoidal commutation. Alternately, combining a magnetic or optical incremental linear encoder with a Hall-effect switch will deliver commutation, as well as position and velocity loop closure, and ensure correct phasing on power up. Tubular motors are brushless, so they need little maintenance and have low EMI. Present versions offer continuous force exceeding 70 lbs, peak output of approximately 300 lbs, and maximum speed approaching 400 ips.

Q: Can tubular motor be used in gantry system?

A: As with other linear motor types, tubular motors are often integrated with a linear bearing system to provide not only drive force, but also guidance for a load. Their round design makes them ideal for integration with a single guide rail. In gantry systems (with two actuators on an axis), single-rail actuators are preferred over dual-rail designs because systems with more than two rails operating in parallel are much more likely to experience misalignment between rails, which causes binding and premature wear. In fact, many linear motor gantries use tubular style linear motors. And like other linear motors, tubular designs can drive more than one stator on a single thrust rod for multiple, independent movements on the same axis.

Q: How does the tubular motor make the rolling curtain work?

A: The motor is hidden in the roll tube, and the transmission shaft is rotated by the rotation of the motor to realize the lifting of the rolling curtain. When the curtain is raised, the curtain is wound on the scroll shaft, and when it is lowered, the curtain slides laterally along the guide rail. Through the control of the remote control, the curtains can be raised, stopped and lowered.

Q: What are the requirements for tubular motor components?

A: The three parts of the tubular motor work in a slender round tube, which has special requirements for lubricity, high and low temperature performance, and noise attenuation, so the grease used must meet these requirements.

Q: What are the installation instructions for tubular motor?

A: Tubular motor mounts inside the door’s barrel. Based on the pipe diameter, a sleeve adapter or ring adapters mounted inside the pipe are used to compensate for the difference between the outside diameter of the motor and the inside diameter of the pipe. When inserting the tubular motor into the barrel ensure that the plastic tab on the motor aligns with the keyway in the adapter. The crown at the opposite end of the motor will fit inside a drive wheel or differential (depending on the door type). When inserting the motor into the barrel make sure that the motor is parallel with the pipe and that the motor slides completely into the barrel. Gently rotate the tubular motor while pushing it in to allow for the crown to engage with the drive wheel/differential. Tubular motors are supported by two motor mounting angles bolted to the drive bracket plate.

Q: What is the emergency manual operation of tubular motor?

A: Tubular motors are equipped with an integrated manual override. To manually operate the door use the winding shaft provided. On non-rated counter doors, the manual override allows you to open or close the door in case of a power failure. NOTE: On rated counter doors, the manual override is operable only if the electromagnetic clutch of the release mechanism located at the opposite end of the barrel is engaged.

Q: Are these motors quiet when operated?

A: Yes! At an average 38 db, our whisper quiet motors are among the quietest motors in the industry. Many other tubular motor brands are much noisier.

Q: Do they work if there is a power failure?

A: Yes! If you use a battery in the system, they will work even when your house power has failed. We have small high-efficiency rechargeable backup batteries that fit inside any standard valance or fascia board. They can also be concealed lower down behind something, or you can use your own system.

Q: Can I use these motors for a home theater screen AND blackout window blinds?

A: Yes! You can make our tubular motors do many different things.

Q: Can I set the upper and lower travel limits easily?

A: Yes! The non-radio type of tubular motors use an electronic system set by activating a 'learn' mode, and the limits are set by simply adjusting your control switch or remote to move them into the desired top and bottom positions (these positions are blocked into memory). This is much easier than the old style with screw settings on the motor.

Q: Can I interface these systems with other home automation systems?

A: Yes! Our motors can be run from any system capable of controlling DC voltage.

Q: What types of applications are tubular motors used for?

A: The tubular motor can offer extensive range and value for money and can also provide effective performance along with quality and reliability. They are used for the various applications for the interior (blinds/curtain covering), external (awnings), roller shutters, etc.

Q: How do you size a motor for a load?

A: The required torque is calculated by multiplying the sum of load torque and acceleration torque by the safety factor. When the required torque for the motor varies over time, determine if the motor can be used by calculating the effective load torque.

Q: What is the full load of a motor?

A: The motor full load current is the maximum current the motor windings are designed to draw under specific conditions. It is simply the rated current of the motor at rated load and voltage conditions. With most electric motors, the power rating in KW (or HP) is commonly the output shaft power of the motor.

Q: What happens when the motor is overloaded?

A: Motor overloads occur when motors are drawing too much current. The main issue with excess current is that it creates heat which degrades the insulation surrounding the conductors that create a stator magnetic field.
